Financial literacy is understanding how money works in the real world: how YOU manage, earn, and/or make money that will benefit your best interest. Depending on how well you manage money, invests it (turn it into more money), will determine how well you are with making your money work for you in preparing you for life after foster care. The Maryland Department of Human Resources has placed strategies to help you strengthen your ability to understand how money and credit works, and how to improve your finances. Take Charge Today is a program and curriculum with a decision-based approach to personal finance. Formerly Family Economics & Financial Education, Take Charge Today provides a consistent framework for thinking through financial choices in order to improve well-being.

Complete Your Credit Report

  • For youth 14-17 years old: DHR will complete a Credit Report for you! Talk to your case worker to see if your credit report has been completed. Your case worker should have your credit report. View your credit report and discuss what it means.
  • For youth 18-21 years old: Complete your credit report online by visiting www.annualcreditreport.com. You can also fill out the Annual Credit Report Request Form. This is a paper request form to have your credit report sent to you by mail. Please read and follow the instructions on the form. Please work with your case worker on completing your form. If you have any questions, talk to your case worker or your Independent Living Coordinator.
